The timeline
The first edition of Remembering the Kanji was published in 1977.
The first version was published in August 2005, it had the following features:
- Flash card review page (using simple ajax for retrieving and updating each card, one by one)
- Leitner graph (using some gif images and css)
The community forums were added later in June 2006. The forums are based on PunBB with small adptations to the layout, and a design remade from scratch, suing a theme similar to that of the main site.
RevTK was Fabrice (project maintainer)'s first serious php website, so there was a lot to learn. The pre-2009 version did not use MVC or php 5, had SQL querry strings embedded in flat php files, and soon became impossible to maintain as a "hobby".
There was some work on another webapp called Trinity which was for some time available as an alpha, and included many more features based on JMDICT : review sentences, vocabulary, view all words linked to a kanji, and so on. Unfortunately it was started on the old codebase, and also became difficult to maintain. It is currently gathering dust.. may make a comeback as an open source project if this one works well enough.
2008-2009 Changelog_for_Reviewing_the_Kanji#Update_November_1.2C_2009 complete rewrite of the codebase.
Mid-2009 new codebase on test.koohii.com
Jan 2010 : Open sourced!
